As the title suggests, this exhibition project proposes to continue to reflect on the thoughts and issues raised during and after the Kassel Documenta 15 in 2022. Ikkibawikrr, being one of the participating artists of Kassel Documenta 15 and a privileged long-term dialogue partner with the Indonesian artist communities like Ruangrupa and Jatiwangi Art Factory, still ruminates on the intense experiences and the stimulating ideas that they could acquire at the Kassel Documenta 15. In that sense this exhibition project has been conceived in the wake of the challenges and the afterthoughts relevant to the Kassel Documenta, which deserve to be revisited and reevaluated.
Far from focusing on one-off international exchange event this project aims to build a platform for ongoing dialogue between Korean artist community and Indonesian counterpart. For instance, the following year in 2026 we are planning to invite another group of Indonesian artists or artists collective to take over and explore further the ideas and the shared knowledges which will result from this year¡¯s initial phase of the project. The common endeavor in pursuit of the alternative modes of contemporary art practice will be encouraged and mutually reinforced to the extent that we could hopefully reinvent together the institutional network and structure in the near future.
Hard times are coming all over the world, when we¡¯ll be wanting the voices of artists who can see alternatives to how we live now, can see through our fear-stricken society and its obsessive technologies to other ways of being, and even imagine real grounds for hope. As poets, visionaries we¡¯ll need artists who can remember and reactivate freedom and become realists of a larger reality. Facing up with these hard times we propose to delve into new forms of social aesthetics which leads us to reinvent and conceive some social experiments of living together.
In line with these core ideas closely associated with the Lumbung values this exhibition intends to provide Korean artists and public with thought-provoking experiences and an unprecedented opportunity to approve the possibility of practicing art other than Western modern aesthetics-oriented one. We expect to see Julia Sarisetiati and Ary Sendy Trisdiarto from Jakarta bring their works based on the internal and in-depth discussions with the other Ruangrupa members about their own experiences of Kassel Documenta 15 and after. We also look forward to see Jatiwangi Art Factory show us their new social aesthetics-oriented work about their recent community art project of distributing free lunch-box for local school students. Ikkibawikrr is invited to reflect on how to engage in the commoning practices in relation to their own interpretation of Lumbung values and on the legacy of Korean alternative art spaces and artist-run spaces which do not exist anymore in Korea.
In parallel with the exhibition a round table discussion as a kind of artists talk program will be organized at the occasion of the exhibition opening to share the participating artists thoughts and experiences with the Korean artists and public. A complete catalogue will be published with the contributions of Korean and international writers after the opening of the show.
